‘Boy Cries Wolf’-track 1-‘Travelling Song’.
Formerly ‘Traveller’s Jingle’,this was one of the first songs we recorded for the album. We started off by recording the acoustic guitar; we recorded 2 separate guitar parts-one part played in C with capo on 3rd fret, one in G with capo on 8th fret-to create a nice, spacious jangly sound. We then recorded the drums old school style, using only 3 mics(2 overheads, one on the kick drum)-this gave us a nice ‘70’s drum sound. If i remember rightly,we overdubbed the toms afterwards and added tambourine to the choruses…
A few months later,we recorded the main vocal in my house, using the same mic we used for pretty much every instrument on the album( an AKG C3000B for those interested ; ). We then recorded India Patel’s beautiful violin part a few weeks after that(after a few beers which Rosie Doonan brought into the session-Rosie was doing her vocal for ‘In The Pines’ that day too…but that’s for another blog entry…),and then Rich Stephenson(the producer/head honcho/resident mentalist)played the bass-D.I-ing his Fender Precision(or was it a mini Squier Mustang that we borrowed?! Again,i forget…) and adding what he calls ‘the legendary Beach Boys Bass Reverb’. Last of all we recorded the fab Martyn Roper(of the Lovesick Cowboys/Old Time String Band)on his banjo. He came staight from a prior rehearsal and was in and out in an hour…such a professional : )
So there you have it. ‘Travelling Song’. Next up; ’Jekyll and Hyde’…
Bye for now
